GOOGLE DRIVE’S WARNING BANNER TO WARN ABOUT SUSPICIOUS FILES

Google recently rolled out a new banner to Drive “SUSPICIOUS WARNING BANNER”. The company says that users will now see a “warning banner” when they are about to open or download any suspicious dangerous files. This warning banner was first introduced at Google Cloud Next 2021 in October. The warning banner already works for Google Workspace users when opening suspicious Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings. This feature is steadily rolling out to more users although it could take some time. It remains largely unclear about how the feature actually is going to work, but it might be possible that the Google AI will scan for unknown files and formats.

Banner reads: “This file looks suspicious. It might be used to steal your personal information.”

These are warning banners and users can either choose to trust it and can ignore it. It does not exactly prevent you from downloading the file and from accessing it. So, everything comes to the users and it depends on the user’s choice to choose it. However, it is important to know that Google has certain criteria to flag the suspicious file. Google might flag them as suspicious or dangerous and it also scans the linked images for the malicious content. So, the feature does not completely safeguard users from the attacks but it raises a Question Mark for the files and documents that does not meet the Google’s terms of services and its spam policy.

This feature is rolling out gradually and more users will get it in the coming days.

This new security is enabled by default through Google so, you are not required to do anything. Even if the warning isn’t displayed, never open or download files that strangers share with you. Do carefully check out the details of the documents and emails that you receive. And also remember if you don’t use the sharing option, you can turn it off. Get some trustworthy antivirus to protect your personal information and computer from malicious files and software.
